A Nest Egg is something you put away and save for a rainy day. Instead of money, this nest egg is time-capsuled information in both form and content, in response to the exhibition call for messages to future non-earth faring folks. Nest Egg looks at human technologies developed by observing the natural world (in this case the mosquito-inspired invention of the hypodermic needle) and how the practice of learning from observing non-human intelligence is a fruitful pursuit with the potential to provide sustainable solutions being that humans are the only animal that produce non-compostable waste. It also warns that the human animal is a bloodsucking extractor of resources wherever it roams.
The nest is a 3D scan of a real one made from branches, textile scraps, plastic waste, feathers and human hair. Bird-nest architecture being incredibly diverse in its use of available resources, it is also a nod to the fact that we will be/are living in habitats of our own industrial refuse.
I collaborated with Ben McCarthy @paleeyesmusic on some very cool spatial audio that makes the experience much more layered and interactive when experienced onsite.
Ben McCarthy is an electronic musician and sound artist from Toronto, Canada. Taking found sound and audio documentary as his material, he experiments with signal processing and emerging technology attempting to pull from the noise a sensual present that invites embodied attention. His compositions and installations raise questions about the social, technological and economical conditions that produce the listening subject.
